Selecting the right marketing agency is one of the most critical and challenging tasks that a business faces. The salespeople at most marketing agencies are talented, and after a while, all marketing companies sound great. To pick the right company, you need to cut through the salesperson’s fluff and get to the heart of solving your challenge(s).

  1. Don’t let the marketing company drive the content of your discussion. Get past the meet and greet session quickly. Describe your challenge(s) and ask their marketing consultant how they specifically intend to help you resolve your issue(s). Don’t accept vague answers; drill into the detail–this is where most candidates will fail. Remember, if they didn’t do the required homework, it’s because they either don’t know how to or they don’t care enough about your business.

  2. Resist the temptation to help them if they struggle with an answer to one of your questions. Salespeople are good at picking up on hints. The biggest mistake companies make when selecting their marketing company is helping their candidate reach the desired response. You should “play dumb” as needed to ensure they get to the right answer independently. Stay silent; make them ask the right questions. While this approach may seem a bit harsh, it enables you to test them before hiring them, only to learn later that you’re wasting your money by buying their marketing services.

  3. Access how prepared the candidate agency is for your meeting. Consider have they done their homework? If they haven’t, how do they know they can help you resolve your challenge(s)? Consider the following questions:
    • Do they know what you do, how you earn revenue?
    • Do they know who your potential customers might be?
    • Have they asked about or identified your competitors?
    • Have they asked you why a potential customer should pick you instead of a competitor?
    • Have they looked at your website?
    • Have they researched your visibility in the entire digital landscape?
    • Do they have suggestions on how to improve your content marketing?
    • Have they asked which marketing tactics you’ve tried and the results from each?

    If they can't answer most of these questions, why are you wasting your time meeting with them?

  4. Don’t take what you’ve learned from one interview and carry it into the next interview. For example, If marketing agency X says the key to success is improving your website’s content, don’t start with the next candidate, saying, “I know my content needs improving.” While this sounds simple, it gets much more challenging when comparing numerous marketing companies. The candidates you interview later in your process gain a considerable advantage based upon what you learn from each previous interview. By the time you get to the last candidate, you pretty much tell them precisely what to do; they simply agree, and the result is they sound like the best option.

  5. Don’t select the “yes“ man/woman. If the candidate never challenges you during any of your discussions, either you are a marketing expert, or they are just looking to nod in agreement, take your money, and don’t care about your project’s success. If you’re a marketing expert, then why are you hiring a marketing consultant? You’re hiring these people for their expertise and the marketing services they offer, not to be your best friend, and it’s your business, your money at risk. Having a marketing company with the nerve to challenge you (especially so early in a relationship) can be a valuable asset and save you lots of money as you move forward. You might even want to consider intentionally testing them to see if they will challenge you when you’re wrong; this is a great way to de-risk your selection process.
